Ok, so I am a scattered mess, just trying to get myself back on top after two weeks in Michigan. Here are some things that I’ve done recently. I made a clasp with my new friend Jana:
Full disclosure: It doesn’t close. But I made the thing and so I have a bit of pride about it. Here it is in context, Pam Spitzmueller’s bookbinding course at the Paper and Book Intensive, which I was able to take after I taught a pressure printing workshop the week before. Some of these clasps look a little nicer than our clasp, but all of the books are adorable and small.
Soon after this photo was taken, I was trapped by a cancelled flight and booked into a hotel with this view:
Do you want to go there? Here is the link.
As soon as I got home, a day later than I expected, It was time for something new: printing for someone else.
That is a stressful business! Suddenly all decisions about color and quality are being made on someone else’s behalf. I was surprised by how different, and how much more agonizing, it was than printing for myself.
As soon as these prints were wrapped up and delivered it was time to head to the London Centre for Book Arts for an intro letterpress weekend and then back down to Brighton for a binding workshop the following day.
That is it really, apart from the hours I’ve spent trying to dig myself out of my inbox and a pile of dirty laundry.
In other, more exciting news: we have acquired the car of my dreams! Behold, the Nissan Micra, a car shaped like a car. Do you see what I mean? Look at it:
I challenge you to find a more adorable car-shaped car than this one. It is like a car out of a Saturday morning cartoon. It is finally BBQ season in Brighton. And so I will leave you with this photo, and a promise that a more interesting post will follow soon.
I’ve always been a fan of the 1985 Yugo GV. They’re cute anyway :p

I love the car and the fact that there may be some additional seats in the back for passengers. Is that possibly true? Also, the BBQ scene on the beach looks wonderful – What went onto that grill right after the photo was taken? You are busy, busy, busy!!!
Yummy. Grilled octopus.
yay a car! i have dreams about a car, especially after my own trip to michigan. thank you for the little note, by the way. i love it.
Yes, the car is a little dream! I was so pleased the Bonnie was going to see you! Congrats again on the show!
I love the brass clasps. Would love to see more!
Hi there! Unfortunately, MY brass clasps are not worthy of further investigation, but you might want to look here: http://www.bookclasp.com/index.htm
delightful—I am from Toronto and only spent one day in Brighton but of course we made it to the seashore and all I could think was how much it reminded me of Lake Huron. Your pic of the Hibachi/BBQ would not be out of place over here, Thx for your wonderful blog from a hand bound book lover across the sea. cheers!
Thank you Ward! Next time we take out the grill I’ll cook a pork and apple sausage in your honor!
Where did you get your loupe?
Hi Ben! I got it ages ago when I was living in the states. I ordered it online. Look for a “linen counter” and you will find a great one.
